It's All Happening at the Zoo

We went to the Toronto Zoo yesterday, which got "At the Zoo" by Simon and Garfunkel in my husband's head all day. Yeah, that was delightful considering he only knows a line or two...which he hummed and sang a few times over. But that's okay, because cute animals trump everything else. And I got my revenge in the car on the way back by doing a heart-rending version of "Hello" with Adele. Marriage is all about give and take, after all! ;)

I thought I would share a small handful of pictures from yesterday. I'll probably share a few more on my photography blog soon. Because again, cute animals are the ultimate trump card.

The male giraffe, Kiko, is actually from my local zoo in South Carolina! Of all the zoos in the world, I think it is amazing that my two hometowns collided with this adorable fella. And I really wonder if  they recognize accents, because I swear he looked right at me every time I spoke.

And I don't know how many of you have watched it, but every time I see certain animals I think of "Walk on the Wild Side". That show always makes me laugh, no matter how many times I've seen it in repeats.

And one other quick note - I changed the layout and graphics on here. The old layout was more summery and had been up for months (probably a record for me!). I just needed a small facelift around here and it's amazing how refreshing it can be.

Happy Halloween!

Clean & Clear Skincare Pore Perfect Routine

I find Clean & Clear to be hit or miss with my skin, but their Acne Spot Treatment is one of my favorites at clearing a breakout quickly. So when given the chance to test out their routine for clearing pores, I took it. With all of the makeup and such that goes on my skin, I love the promise of a deep cleanse. For me, I chose the pores option not because of breakouts, but because my pores are changing.

Step 1: Deep Action Cream Cleanser
Description - The Deep Action Cream Cleanser removes dirt, oil, and makeup deep down to the pores. It's oil-free formula won't clog your pores and will leave your skin feeling cool and fresh with the tingle of really clean skin.

Directions - With clean hands, splash water on your face and apple a dime-sized amount of the cleanser to your palms. Work it into a lather and apply it to your face, avoiding your eyes. For extra cleansing action, use a washcloth. Rinse face thoroughly and pat dry with a towel.

My thoughts - I like this as far as cleaning goes. It's creamy enough that I did not notice it causing my dry skin to become drier. My face does feel a lot cleaner afterward and it removes makeup quite well. It's a bit harsh with my sensitive skin, so I don't think I will continue to use it everyday. I think this would be great for during that "time of the month" when your skin is acting out. And I did notice a slight change on my nose where I have a few blackheads. My skin leans more toward dry, but my nose has a mind of its own. I can see this working well for those with combination skin.

Step 2: Blackhead Clearing Astringent
Description - The second most important step in clean skin is going after any dirt left in your pores. Tackle any blackheads with the Blackhead Clearing Astringent. It is specially formulated to reach deep into pores and remove dirt and oil, which are the facial impurities that can lead to blackheads, pimples, and acne.

Directions - Soak a cotton ball or pad with the astringent and wipe it over your face. The T-zone is usually where oil hangs out, so give that a good once-over. This product can dry out your skin, one time a day is recommended at first. You can increase to two to three times a day, if it is needed or recommended by your doctor.

My thoughts - Holy strong astringent, Batman. It's a little too much for me even with once daily use. But again, my nose has a mind of its own and did not mind it at all. Since that is where my blackheads have taken up residence, I guess that worked out well for me. I haven't noticed this clearing them up, but I haven't noticed them getting worse either. I wouldn't be against using it on any breakouts to help clear them up faster, but it is too strong for me to use all over my face.

Step 3: Dual Action Moisturizer
Description - The Dual Action Moisturizer is oil-free moisture with a proven acne-fighting ingredient, salicylic acid. It moisturizes dry skin while treating and helping to prevent pimples. The salicylic acid deep cleans pores.

Directions - After cleaning your face, this is the finishing touch. Because of the salicylic acid, have a light hand applying. Apply a thin layer over the affected area once a day for a few days. You can build up to two or three times a day, if needed or recommended by your doctor.

My thoughts - I like that this says "affected area". It worked pretty well on my T-zone, where my pores cause me the most problems. On other parts of my face, it was strong but not as much as I thought it would be. A thin layer is definitely the way to go. It didn't do too much for my dry and sensitive skin, but it didn't cause an allergic reaction or too much redness either.

Thoughts on Complete Pore Perfect Routine:
I did have a pimple on my chin right when I started this routine and it cleared up within two or three days. I don't get pimples that often, but when I do they usually last 5-7 days. My blackheads haven't vanished, but this kept them at bay. At best, I think this routine is great for those with mild breakouts or if you want to spot clean certain areas of your face. I don't feel like this is the perfect fit for me for a daily cleansing routine, but I do believe I'll reach for them when I have a problem area and to attack my blackheads.

Have you tried Clean & Clear? Does it take you back to your middle school and high school days like it does me? I do love when products give me a sense of nostalgia. Though, I love the new look and bottle shape they have now.

My Thoughts on GlassesShop.com!

When I was contacted to try a pair of glasses from GlassesShop.com, I knew I wanted to pick out a really fun pair. I view glasses as another way to accessorize and I love having different pairs and colors to choose from. The only thing I don't stray too far from is the shape, because you still want to stick to pairs that flatter your face. For me, I have a round face so I stick mostly to square frames. You ovals out there that can wear any frame, consider me jealous!

GlassesShop offers non-prescription and prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. They offer various pairs of cheap glasses to keep even the most fashionable diva happy. You can upload a photo and virtually try on any pair. I narrowed my choices down to three, but picked the Fayette Wayfarer in multicolor. With each pair, you also get a case and cleaning cloth.

They have a geometric pattern and glitter to add dimension. GLITTER. Yep, I was sold after that. This pair is amazing up close and just look like a brownish red from a distance, so I feel like they are really easy to wear from day to night. An easy foray into the print world without making too huge a splash. They are made of acetate and are very comfortable while wearing.

For my readers, I have a coupon code to save you 50% on select eyeglasses and sunglasses with free lenses (sale frames excluded). Just enter GSHOT50. There is also a campaign going on currently called "First Pair Free", where all new customers can get their first pair for free and pay only shipping and handling. That's a pretty awesome deal!

**I received these glasses from GlassesShop. All pictures and thoughts are my own. I am not being paid, nor are there any affiliate links in this post.

My Favorite Fall/Winter Trends for 2015-16

Fall is upon us and winter is close behind! This is absolutely my favorite time of year- holidays, the weather, the fashion. I'm not one for the heat, so I love when sweater weather comes around. Nothing in fashion makes me happier than layers. Layering for life!

Here are a few trends that I know I'll be enjoying all autumn and winter. I always go for the easy and doable ones, because I think daily fashion should be easy. I want pieces that I can wear time and time again in multiple ways and combinations. I'd rather have more time to enjoy my morning coffee than standing in my closet wondering what to wear. But then again, I take my coffee very seriously.

  • Plaid - Kerri turned me on to this scarf and I just know I have to add it to my closet! (via Joe Fresh)
  • Tie-neck shirts - I have two in my closet. So great for layering under sweaters and cardigans. (via Joe Fresh)
  • Shearling - Little or big doses, this can be found on accessories and clothes. (via Joe Fresh)
  • Flared Jeans - Flares have a special place in my heart. Plus, they are super comfortable. (Genesis via Alloy)
  • Chunky Knits - Cozy is the goal. (via The Bay)
  • Brown - A main color of the 70s, which is the decade du jour. (via The Bay)
  • Creamy White - A warmer take on winter whites. (via The Bay)
What trends are you loving? I'll always be mad for plaid during cooler months, so give me all things plaid!

Fall Trend: Berry Lips (Ft. Arbonne)

Berry. You guys, it's a love affair. I can't stop loving everything berry. Give me berry, any berry, and I am sold. Arbonne is touting these as the 90's lip trend of statement lips, but I usually think more about brown lips for that trend. I went through that phase the first time it was around and I'm not about to go through it again. Brown did not work for me, especially when I paired it with bright blue eyeshadow. Oh 90's Wendy, what were you thinking? But these berry lips? That's a train I'm willing to board!

I get so much inspiration from there and love seeing into daily lives (those little perfect and imperfect moments). Mess with my dog, you mess with me.

I had other ideas for a post, but I just couldn't sit down and edit the pictures or write the blurbs. I've spent nearly every second since Wednesday with my dog. During his evening walk on Wednesday, Indy was attacked in our complex by a large dog that was off-leash and unattended. Indy isn't a fighter and was submissive, which really helped the outcome not be worse. He has three bite marks and is taking antibiotics for them.

We filed a complaint with Toronto Animal Services and started an investigation to find the owner of the other dog who fled the scene right after. Our building's management is also going over security camera footage. I spent all of Wednesday evening crying, but now I'm angry and ready to find the guy. I don't want any possible future attacks to happen and that dog is obviously aggressive.

Indy is starting to feel better now and sleeping through the night. He is still having problems sitting down, but he can walk better. I'm so grateful that things weren't worse. We are all just really emotional about it, but time heals. My little pup is still as sweet as ever and lapping up all of the extra treats and attention. Maybe he took lessons from me with my broken knee. ;) If only I could heal as quickly as he is!

I hope my Canadian readers have a lovely Thanksgiving weekend and Happy Columbus Day on Monday to my American readers! I'm off to enjoy a weekend of dinner with the family, catching up on our PVR, and hugging my dog until he is sick of me. Which has probably already happened by now...

Blog of the Month: October 2015

In September, Ashley from Ashbam was my featured blogger. You can read that post and see other past featured blogs under the "blog of the month" label! Being my blog of the month gets you a designated blog post, a sidebar button, and a mention on my Twitter account. The sidebar button stays up all month long. I don't believe in necessarily making bloggers pay for advertising and I'd much rather show you blogs that I really enjoy reading. And I hope you end up enjoying them too!

botm blog of the month featured blogger
This month, Katie from That Geek Online is my featured blogger. She and I connected on Twitter quite a while ago, but I feel like we're kindred spirits in a lot of ways. She blogs about a little bit of everything, so you're bound to find something you enjoy on her blog. She just finished up a month-long interview series based on strong females, as well. And at the moment, she can be seen with awesome green hair. What's not to like about any of that?!

September 2015 Favorites

It's finally fall! I'm so happy cooler weather is here. And even better, holidays are just around the corner. The end of September to December is my absolute favorite time of the year. Even better, it's October- AKA the month I should be getting the ok to start walking again. Hallelujah!

Also, I must apologize if my pictures haven't had the same quality to them. It's extremely difficult to photograph things with a broken knee. I have to stand and lean against my table to keep from falling. Good times. My balance is just starting to come back now that I can have 50% weight on my left leg. Every step is hard and painful and I still can't put my foot flat on the floor yet. I would not wish this on anyone. It's a tough injury that is going to take me a long time to bounce back from.

I don't know why I choose to give most of my knee updates before my monthly favorites. I guess it is because it's the easiest way to fit them in. People are probably getting to the point now where they think I just don't shut up about my stupid injury. Trust me, I'm tired of it also. It just so happens to be a huge part of my life right now that I can't overlook or ignore. I can't wait to get to the point where I have nothing about my knee to talk about!

Blah blah blah, Wendy, stop talking and get to the favorites! Here we go!
